Let the
Sunshine In
Solar heaters—also called solar thermal systems—provide
environmentally friendly ways to heat water for many household
uses. These systems collect the sun’s energy to heat
either air or a fluid. The air or fluid then transfers the
sun’s heat directly or indirectly to your home. Today’s
solar heating systems not only keep swimming pools warm,
they can also heat much of your water and interior rooms.
Solar water heaters are a great investment
for you and your family because they are cost effective for
many uses over the life of the system. Although solar water
heaters cost more up-front than conventional water heaters,
the fuel they use—sunshine—is 100% free, and abundant
in our Florida climate.
The popularity of solar heating is increasing for several reasons:
first, the systems are reliable, adaptable and pollution-free
because they use renewable energy from the sun. Second, they’re
also more streamlined—some systems include sleek, attractive,
low-profile collectors that people often mistake for skylights.
TVs and DVDs in standby mode
still use several watts of power. Plug home electronics
into power strips, and turn the strips off when you’re
not using the devices.
Lower the thermostat on your hot
water heater to 120°F.
